Hosted by the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region with the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) and the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) as the host co-ordinators, the 2025 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition (2025MIECF), themed “Innovation and Green Development – Solutions to Build Beautiful Cities”, entered its second day today (28 March). Three Green Forum sessions were held, inviting environmental experts and industry leaders from various countries and regions to engage in discussions on topics such as green transition, technological innovation, and environmental exchanges and co-operation in the Pan-Pearl River Delta region. Attendees also exchanged cutting-edge information and technologies related to environmental protection, further advancing green, high-quality development.
Centred around the theme “Green Transition Boosted by New Quality Productive Forces”, Green Forum Session 1 held this morning (28 March) featured speakers including Mr. Xu Bijiu, Director General of the Central Supervision and Coordination Office of Ecological and Environmental Protection, Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China; Ms. Tao Xiaosong, Deputy Director of the General Office, Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China; Mr. José Carlos Pimenta Machado, President of the Management Board, Portuguese Environment Agency; Mr. Gao Bo, Team Leader of the Research Group, China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research; and Mr. James Lander, Co-founder and Director of ALGAESYS S.A. This session was moderated by Mr. Wong Seng Fat, Alfred, Interim Master of the Cheng Yu Tung College, University of Macau.
Promoting green and low-carbon practices is essential for the high-quality development of society in an era characterised by rapid global economic growth and limited resources. Emerging quality productive forces, which integrate advanced technologies, operational efficiency, and high standards, are driving society and the economy towards a green transition. The speakers shared their professional perspectives on how these productive forces can foster economic growth while safeguarding ecological integrity, ultimately contributing to the realisation of a sustainable future.
Mr. Xu Bijiu gave an address on “Applying Green Development Principles to Foster New Quality Productive Forces”, while Ms. Tao Xiaosong delivered a speech entitled “Cultivate and Enhance New Quality Productive Forces to Drive High-Quality Development with Elevated Levels of Protection”, in which she explained the positive results of green and low-carbon development and the need to establish a policy framework in favour of new quality productive forces in the environmental sector at a faster pace. She also proposed strategies such as source prevention, precise control and management, regulatory guidance, and market intervention to facilitate coordinated efforts in achieving high-level protection and high-quality development.
Other speakers shared their insights in speeches entitled “Embracing New Challenges towards Green Transition – The Portuguese Perspective”, “New Pollutant Detection Technology and its Application for New Quality Productive Forces - Taking Microplastics as an Example”, and “Circular Water and Waste Avoidance Solutions for Regenerating Economies”.
This year’s MIECF continues to seek professional accreditation for designated forums and issue certificates of attendance to participants in designated sessions, giving full play to its role as a professional knowledge-sharing platform.
