Mr. Gao is mainly engaged in the research of the theory, technology and production and industrialization of clean coal and air pollution control. In recent years, Mr. Gao chairs the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and the National Natural Science Fund, conducts research in development of issues related with the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863 Program), National Science and Technology Support Program, International Projects under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Key Provincial Scientific and Technological Innovation Projects. To deal with the key issue of efficient removal of pollutants from coal-fired flue gas and synergetic control, he has conducted research in and developed new technologies for multi-stage high-strength removal of pollutants from coal-fired flue gas, thus solved the problem of water-saving and efficient control of coal-fired flue gas pollutants in water-shortage areas, developed a series of anti-toxicity catalyst formulation, a complete set of SCR DeNOx technology, a catalyst regeneration and modification process, and solved several issues related with the catalyst formulation and the complex and ever changing catalytic denitration arising from the compatibility of different types of fuel in China. Established a variety of new methods for the synergetic removal of pollutants, developed a series key technologies for the efficient wet flue gas desulfurization and the integrated control of mercury nitrate. By combining research and development of the technology for the deep purification of multiple wet electrostatic of pollutants, he developed a complete set of technologies and equipment for the removal of pollutants from flue gas, to achieve ultra-low emissions of pollutants from flue gas. Through cooperation in research, the series of technical equipment that he has developed has successfully achieved large-scale industrial application, having already transferred to MET (a USA corporation) several core technologies, resulting in significant economic, environmental and social benefits.
The result of his researches has already provided technological support to solve the issues of atmospheric haze and acid rain from source. He is the winner of a second prize in the National Technology Invention Award, a second prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, a second prize in the National Teaching Achievement Award, three-time winner of the Zhejiang Science and Technology Award, winner of the China Machinery Industry Science and Technology Award and three Chinese Patents Excellence Awards. Mr. Gao has published over 140 academic papers, holds 32 invention patents (including two international patents) and was responsible for the planning of more than national industry technical standards. The results of his research enhanced the level and standards of the environmental equipment of our country. He is the recipient of a special subsidy from the State Council of the Chinese Government, and is also national candidate for the “New Century Ten Million Talents Project”, training staff for the national candidates, New Centry Excellent Talents Scheme of the Ministry of Education and the Zhejiang Province 151 Talent Project, Advanced Individual in Technology Work of the 11th 5-Year Plan of the PRC and an Advanced Worker for Machinery Industry Standardization of the 12th 5-Year Plan of the PRC.
