Mr. José Carlos Pimenta Machado

Vice-President of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA)


Mr. José Carlos Pimenta Machado graduated in Environmental Engineering from the University of Aveiro in 1986. He holds a postgraduate degree in Environmental Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and a Master in Public Administration from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

Mr. Pimenta Machado has dedicated his professional life to the environment in matters related to the management of water resources. He started working on the Integrated Management Committee of the Ave Hydrographic Basin, planning and coordinating depollution actions in the Ave Hydrographic Basin; he was a member of various regional environment institutions, where he played roles in the management of water resources. Between 2008 and 2011, he was the Director of the Coastal Water Resources Department of ARH do Norte, IP and, between 2012 and 2018, the Regional Administrator of the Administration of the North Hydrographic Region, a decentralised department of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA). 

Since 2018, Mr. Pimenta Machado is the Vice-President of the Board of Directors of APA, as well as the Chairman of Sociedade Polis Ria de Aveiro. Since 2013, he has also been the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sociedade Polis Litoral Norte. Mr. Pimenta Machado is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Hydraulics and Water Resources, Faculty of Engineering of Porto.
