Dr. MA Jun is the Director of the Center for Finance and Development, Tsinghua National Institute of Financial Research. He is also Chairman of Green Finance Committee of China Society for Finance and Banking, and Co-chair of G20 Green Finance Study Group. Before joining Tsinghua University, he was the Chief Economist at the Research Bureau of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) from 2014-17. Prior to that, he worked for 13 years at Deutsche Bank, where he was Managing Director, Chief Economist for Greater China, and Head of China and Hong Kong Strategy. From 1992-2000, he worked as public policy specialist, economist and senior economist at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. From 1988-1990, he was a research fellow at the Development Research Center of China’s State Council.
Dr. Ma has published fourteen books and several hundred articles. His main research areas include macroeconomics, monetary policy, financial market development, as well as environmental economics. In 2014, he led China’s green taskforce which developed 14 policy recommendations on establishing the “green finance system” in China and, in 2015-16, he led the drafting of China’s Green Finance Guidelines, which became the first comprehensive policy framework for green finance in the world. As co-chair of the G20 Green Finance Study Group, he played a critical role in formulating the global consensus on green and sustainable finance development.
Dr. Ma was frequently rated at the top in his fields by various investor polls during his investment banking career. His accolades include the No.1 Asia economist and the No.1 China analyst in Institutional Investor’s survey for four years in a row (2009-2012), and many awards for his books over the past years. In 2016 and 2017, he received awards from First Financial and AsiaMoney for his outstanding contribution to China’s green finance development.
Dr. Ma received his Ph.D. in Economics from Georgetown University in 1994, and his master’s degree in Management Science from Fudan University in 1988. He is Special Advisor on Sustainable Finance to United Nations Environment, Vice Chairman of China International Economic Relations Association, Member of Stewardship Board on Shaping the Future of Environment and Natural Resource Security of the World Economic Forum, and Member of China’s Finance 40 Forum.
