Bios

Ellen van Bueren is professor of Urban Development Management at the Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology, and Principal Investigator on urban governance at the Institute of Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS) in Amsterdam. In her research and teaching she focuses on governance, planning and management of sustainable urban development. Integration of urban systems, including servicing infrastructures, and the resulting challenges from a planning, governance and management perspective have been at the centre of recent research.

Ellen teaches in multidisciplinary Master Curricula: Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering; Management in the Built Environment; City Development; Industrial Ecology; and Construction, Management and Engineering.

She is a member of the daily board of the collaborative centres between universities of Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam (Erasmus) on Sustainability and on BOLD Cities (Big Open and Linked Data). She is board member of the Dutch knowledge foundation Urban Area Development and supervisory board member of Cirkelstad, an initiative of public, private and civic stakeholders to foster circular cities.

Ellen is editor of the Emerald journal Smart and Sustainable Built Environment, the Springer journal Infrastructure Complexity. She was initiator and first editor of Sustainable Urban Environments: an Ecosystem Approach (Springer, 2012).
