Dr. Chan Sau San, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Monetary Authority of Macao (Macao)

 

Bios

Sau-San Chan was born in Macao and educated in Macao, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.   He received his Ph.D. (Economics and Finance) from the University of Hong Kong and his Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Warwick in England.

After his graduation from the University of Warwick in 1988, Mr. Chan had been a business economist and senior executive in major public and private organisations in Hong Kong.  He was Economist at the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, Senior Economist/Head of Economic Research at the Bank of East Asia Limited, Senior Manager at the Economic Division of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, and General Manager (Economic Analysis) of New T&T (Hong Kong) Limited of the Wharf Group.

After completing his doctoral studies, Mr. Chan returned to his hometown in 1998 and started to teach at the Faculty of Business Administration, the University of Macau.  He subsequently assumed the administrative duties as Coordinator of Economics & International Finance Programme and Vice-chairman of the Faculty Management Committee.  In February 2001, Mr. Chan was transferred to the Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM) as its Director of the Research & Statistics Department. He was appointed as Member of the AMCM Board of Directors in August 2015 and has served as Chairman of the Board since August 2017.

In 2001-02, Mr. Chan participated in Macao’s gaming liberalisation as a member of the Gaming Tender Commission. He has been appointed by the Macao SAR Government as Member of the Economic Development Committee and Vice-chairman of the Consultative Committee of Statistics.  As a business economist, Mr. Chan has published a number of articles and monographs on Macao and Hong Kong economic issues.  Between 2006 and 2009, he was elected as the Chairman of the Administrative Board of the Macao Economic Association.
