Green Public Day: Enhancing Environmental Protection Awareness among the Public

The 2017 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum and Exhibition (2017MIECF) will close tomorrow (1 April). In each year of MIECF’s, the participation of the general public at the event has been actively promoted. The “Green Public Day” aims to increase public awareness of topics covered by MIECF, namely related to environmental protection and a low-carbon lifestyle.

The final day of 2017MIECF is open to the public, and their participation in this green event is welcomed. The “Green Public Day” aims to increase public awareness of topics related to environmental protection and to promote the concept of environmentally-friendly living and a low-carbon lifestyle.

The theme of the “Green Public Day” is “Let’s Create a Green Environment – Cherish Food and Waste Less”. A variety of themed activities for families will be held, including: a lucky draw; guided tours; workshops on environmental protection; parent-child games; and the chance to visit a kiosk offering a fun environment-related application. In addition, mascots of the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) will be present, introducing information about cherishing food and reducing waste, and promoting public awareness on environmentally-friendly behaviour in everyday life, things that could help the sustainable development of Macao. During the event, there will also be a workshop on environmental protection. Members of the public visiting the exhibition can participate in guided tours teaching how to turn daily waste into creative environmental display or practical products, such as those created in DSPA’s “Red Packet Recycling Project”. There will additionally be parent-child colouring activities that are environmentally-friendly. Accompanied by their parents, children can colour a variety of eco-friendly drawings, learning about the recycling of waste paper, metal, plastic and batteries, as well as cherishing food and reducing waste. The mascots of DSPA include: Mr Earth, Brother Cloud, Sister Flower and Spoonbill Baby – they will join the event and cheer every participant.

In order to encourage green transportation practices by visitors, four free shuttle bus routes will operate during the “Green Public Day”. Services will run between the MIECF venue and the following destinations: Rua do Dr. Pedro José Lobo (Macau Plaza); Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida (opposite to the Pak Wai Parking Lot); Iao Hon Market (opposite to the Iao Hon Park, near the Macau Computer Square); and the Avenida de Guimarães in Taipa (opposite to the Central Park, at Nova Park). Complimentary parking at the MIECF venue will also be available – near Exhibition Hall D. Car parking spaces are limited, and they will be available on a first-come, first-served basis (drivers will have to show an entry ticket with a stamp from the reception at the “Green Public Day”).

In addition, DSPA will invite trade visitors and other participants on a demonstration visit to facilities for electronic waste treatment in Macao, and to visit the eco-friendly facilities of Sands Cotai Central, namely Conrad Macao Hotel, Sheraton Grand Macao Hotel and Holiday Inn Macao that have won the “Macau Green Hotel Award” Gold Medals, with a view to enhancing the MIECF participants’ knowledge about the “Macau Green Hotel Award”.
